Join our friendly team as a Registered Mental Health Nurse Team Leader at CRG Medical Services based in HMP Prison, Chelmsford.

Playing an integral role within our prison service, which aims to ensure primary care is at the heart of our everyday role, working as part of a team delivering care to patients both within the Healthcare Centre and on the Wings / House blocks within the prison environment.

You will work 08:00 – 18:00 Days (4 days a week following a rota pattern)

Main ResponsibilitiesTo provide high quality planned and urgent mental health support to prisoners within a secure setting. This energetic and diverse role is part of a multi professional workforce delivering care to patients both within the Enhanced Care Unit, Residential Wings and all other areas that prisoners have daily access to such as workshops.

The Mental Health Team Leader will be responsible for the day to day operational management of the service reporting to the Mental Health Clinical Lead.

The role will involve integrated working alongside multi professionals within the whole prison setting not just healthcare.


Provide support and leadership to all staff on your shift ensuring day to day functions are maintained
Complete the induction training for new starters and mentor the end of probation.
Providing training/supervision to clinical and non-clinical staff where appropriate.
Provide regular supervision and annual appraisals to identified staff
Ensure staff rotas are fully maintained and the correct skill mix is always available
Deputise for the Mental Health Clinical Lead when required
Carry your own caseload and directly distribute prisoners to the team for caseload management
Assess patients, plan their care, administer treatment and discharge or refer them as appropriate to other healthcare professionals or external agencies.
Be a team member in all ACCT reviews and advise the prison with direct reference to the prisoners mental health
Assess prisoner’s fitness for detention, release or transfer.
Assess alcohol and drug intoxication and withdrawal.
Carry out a first reception health screen, which occurs when a person enters the prison. You must have the ability to make appropriate recommendations on immediate prisoner care.
Provide professional advice and support to Paramedics, HCA’s and non-clinical staff to ensure effective health care in line with current best practice.
Maintain complete and accurate clinical records using the electronic records system ( S1)
Undertake and support in clinical audits.
Provide written statements as required and to give oral testimony as required in any Court or Tribunal
Undertake all duties as required of a Healthcare Professional in HMP Chelmsford and to comply with the competencies, knowledge and skills framework of the Department of Health
Comply with all requirements and/or legislation of the post
Carry out any other activity or action appropriate to the role of a Prison RGN as required

The Ideal Candidate
Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
Ability to build and develop relationships
Strong leadership and management skills
Strong customer service skills
Must be confident and capable of autonomous practice
Registered RMN with current NMC PIN
Experience in a Prison environment highly desirable
Excellent mental health examination skills
Experience of venepuncture and multi-site injections
Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary/professional team
Up to date DBS
Worked as a staff nurse for at least 12 months
